It is with heavy heart that we announce that Dr Utpala Devi departed this world on June 1, 2021, at an early age of 49. She leaves behind her husband and a daughter. We in the fraternity of parasitologists in India were shocked by the news about her untimely passing away so suddenly.
Dr Utpala Devi was born on August 14, 1971, and earned her MBBS from Guwahati University, Assam, in 1994 and got her MD (Microbiology) from Dibrugarh University, Assam in 2004. From the very beginning of her professional career, she was attached to Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) - North East region at Dibrugarh. Starting with the position of Scientist B, she rose to the level of Scientist D in 2016, a post which she had been holding at the time of her demise.
In her short career spanning less than two decades, she had achieved noteworthy achievements in her field. Dr. Utpala Devi handled six projects as Principal Investigator, of which four were funded by ICMR and one each by DBT and BIRAC. She was also the co-investigator in one ICMR and one DBT project. She had a number of publications in reputed journals and had either presented research papers or delivered guest lectures in various national conferences in India. She was an active member of the Indian Academy of Tropical Parasitology (IATP) and was a familiar face in the IATP national conferences each year in various organizational capacities and she organized the 8th National Conference in 2014 at Dibrugarh. She was instrumental in starting the North East Chapter of IATP as well. She was officiating as Assistant Editor for this journal at the time of her demise. Apart from the academic and research work, Dr. Utpala Devi had taken part in various outreach programs in schools and other institutions to raise awareness about various medical and nonmedical issues of importance. She was a valuable asset for RMRC where she was part of numerous committees.
Dr. Utpala Devi was an enthusiastic person who participated in various activities with vigor. We shall miss her ever-smiling and spirited presence. May the almighty confer her eternal peace. OM SHANTI.
